FreeDomain is an open-source project that lets you register domain names and subdomains for free under several community-operated namespaces. It is not a replacement for a commercial .com domain, but for demos, portfolios, and learning, it removes the annual cost barrier.
FreeDomain, hosted at github.com/DigitalPlatDev/FreeDomain, is a community project that provides free domain-like names under namespaces it operates. Currently supported extensions include US.KG, DPDNS.ORG, QZZ.IO, XX.KG, and QD.JE. The project's README notes that more extensions may be added in the future, though this is not a guaranteed commitment.
The service is designed for a specific scenario: you have a project running on localhost or deployed to a free hosting tier, and you want a clean public URL to share with others. Instead of buying a domain that costs money every year, you claim a free name under one of FreeDomain's namespaces and point it at your hosting provider using DNS records.
The setup flow is straightforward. First, you register or log in at the FreeDomain NIC site, such as nic.us.kg. Second, you search for an available name under one of the supported extensions. Third, you configure DNS: either through the built-in DNS provider or by pointing nameservers at a service like Cloudflare. Fourth, you create the appropriate DNS records: an A record pointing at a VPS IP, a CNAME record pointing at Vercel, Netlify, or GitHub Pages, or a TXT record for domain verification. Finally, you wait for DNS propagation, which can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, and test the result.
The common flow is: develop locally on localhost, deploy to a hosting provider, claim a free domain from FreeDomain, point the domain at the hosting, and share the public URL.
You do not own the top-level domain. You are granted the right to use a name within a namespace that the project controls, which is fundamentally different from owning a commercial domain. FreeDomain is best for demos, portfolios, and experimental projects: it should not be used for serious businesses that need long-term brand ownership. Free domain services typically enforce strict anti-abuse policies, and domains used for spam, phishing, or malware will be suspended. Free domains may appear less professional than commercial ones, and if you later migrate to a paid domain, you will need to handle SEO and link transitions. There is also vendor risk: if the project changes its rules, limits namespaces, or shuts down, your domain could be affected. Finally, you should enable two-factor authentication on your DNS and Cloudflare accounts, never expose API tokens, and read the terms carefully to understand conditions for domain suspension or recovery.
FreeDomain is for students, indie developers, and hobbyists who want to publish a project publicly without paying for a domain. It is ideal for portfolios, hackathon demos, staging APIs, and learning DNS fundamentals. If you are building a serious commercial product, invest in a commercial domain from the start: FreeDomain is a stepping stone, not a permanent foundation.
For side projects and learning, FreeDomain is genuinely useful. For anything you plan to build a brand on, buy a real domain.
