Grok Build CLI: xAI enters the coding agent race

xAI is no longer just a chatbot company. With Grok Build, it has shipped a dedicated coding agent that lives in your terminal, and you can try it for free.

What it is

Grok Build is xAI's command-line coding agent. The pitch is straightforward: bring Grok into your terminal, and instead of merely chatting, it can plan changes, edit code, and run verification against a real repository. It installs with a single curl command and launches with a bare grok invocation.

What separates it from a thin chat wrapper is the depth of the agent workflow. Grok Build ships with a TUI and a headless mode for scripting and CI, plus support for Skills, plugins, hooks, MCP servers, AGENTS.md, memory, web search, and subagents. The newer /goal command lets you hand off a long-running objective, and the agent builds a checklist, implements it, and verifies the result while you can pause, resume, or cancel.

Why it matters

• It is a genuine coding agent, not a terminal chatbot. Plan mode proposes a multi-step plan and refuses to touch files until you approve, then surfaces every change as a diff.
• The extensibility story is real: Skills, plugins, hooks, MCP, and AGENTS.md are all supported out of the box, so you can wire in Linear, Sentry, or Postgres and encode team conventions as reusable skills.
• Subagents can fan out parallel work — reading code, chasing root causes, writing tests, reviewing — and the headless mode means it is not limited to an interactive session.
• The /goal command gives you a durable task abstraction with status, pause, and resume, which is closer to how teams actually work than a single prompt.

How it works

At its core, Grok Build operates as a planning-then-executing loop. When you give it a complex task, Plan mode produces a proposed sequence of steps and waits for your approval. Once approved, each change is applied and shown as a diff. For larger jobs, subagents run in parallel to investigate, implement, and review, and the results converge back into the main workspace.

The extensibility layer is what makes it feel like a platform rather than a script. MCP servers connect external data, hooks let you intercept the agent lifecycle, and AGENTS.md carries team conventions into every session. The headless mode exposes the same capabilities to CI pipelines and shell scripts, so the interactive TUI is just one face of the same engine.

Caveats

The free tier is a trial with limits, not an unlimited gift. xAI states that paid plans raise weekly usage allowances, and using an API key directly requires prepaid credits. Treat the free option as a way to evaluate quality and quota on a real repo before you commit your main workflow to it. The agent ecosystem is also still young, so expect rough edges when you push beyond the documented happy paths.
