An algorithms textbook with around 127,000 GitHub stars sounds unlikely, but Hello Algo is exactly that — an open source book that teaches data structures and algorithms with animated illustrations and runnable code.
An algorithms textbook with around 127,000 GitHub stars sounds unlikely, but Hello Algo is exactly that — an open source book that teaches data structures and algorithms with animated illustrations and runnable code.
Hello Algo is an open source, free tutorial for learning data structures and algorithms. Its distinguishing feature is that it does not just hand you definitions and code listings. It uses around 500 animated illustrations to show how arrays shift, nodes link, trees get traversed, and graphs propagate step by step. Then it pairs each animation with ready-to-run code in 14 programming languages, so you can verify the implementation yourself with a single click.
The project describes itself as an algorithm lab. Instead of reading a formula for time complexity and staring at a pointer diagram, you watch the data structure move, then run the code that drives it. The website also hosts around 3,000 community Q&A discussions, and the repo supports translations including Chinese, English, Japanese, and Russian.
The core loop is animation plus runnable code. Each chapter presents a concept with a moving illustration — insertion sort bars rearranging, tree nodes lighting up during traversal, graph edges propagating. Beside it sits a code editor where the same algorithm is implemented, and a play button connects the visual intuition to the actual implementation. You read the definition, watch the structure move, then run the code to confirm it behaves the way the animation suggested.
The content path runs from basic complexity analysis through the standard DSA canon and into dynamic programming and greedy algorithms, which makes it suitable as a refresher before interviews or as a first pass for newcomers.
Animation helps you understand faster, but it does not replace implementing the code yourself, analyzing complexity, and solving exercises. Hello Algo is foundational learning material, not a complete interview solution pack. Some content is licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, so pay attention if you want to reuse material commercially. Watching animations is the start of learning, not the end.
Hello Algo is for beginners learning algorithms for the first time, students who need a foundation, developers reviewing before interviews, and teachers who want illustrations that are easy to explain in class.
Bookmark it, watch the animations, run the code, then do the hard part yourself.
