A GitHub repo with over 63,000 stars is pitching itself as more than a plugin for OpenCode and Codex. It wants to be the operating layer that makes coding agents behave more like disciplined operators.
A GitHub repo with over 63,000 stars is pitching itself as more than a plugin for OpenCode and Codex. It wants to be the operating layer that makes coding agents behave more like disciplined operators.
Oh My OpenAgent is an open-source project that sits above coding agent harnesses like OpenCode and Codex CLI. It does not replace them, and it is not a new model. Instead, it bundles rules, prompts, tools, lifecycle hooks, and workflow guidance into a configuration layer that teaches agents how to work more systematically.
The project ships in two editions. Ultimate Edition for OpenCode is the full version, including 11 agents, 54-plus lifecycle hooks, MCPs, slash commands, Team Mode, ultrawork loops, and hashline edits. Light Edition for Codex CLI goes through LazyCodex and is intentionally smaller, keeping the components that fit Codex's surface well: work rules, comment checking, LSP integration, ultrawork, telemetry, and plugin-scoped MCPs.
Installation is a single command per harness: bunx oh-my-openagent install for OpenCode, or npx lazycodex-ai install for Codex CLI.
The mental model is straightforward: the model is the brain, OpenCode or Codex is the tool you are holding, and Oh My OpenAgent is the layer that teaches that tool how to operate. After installation, each repository carries its own guidance and tool setup. When you open an agent in a repo, it inherits the rules, prompts, and tool configurations without you repeating instructions from scratch.
The Ultimate Edition pre-wires agents to split work, verify themselves, call the right tools, and reduce random guessing. The Light Edition keeps things narrower for Codex, focusing on work rules, output checks, better code understanding, and extra tools. Codex stays Codex, but it works with more structure.
As of late June 2026, the GitHub repository showed approximately 63,849 stars, 5,219 forks, and v4.13.0 as the latest release. That is strong momentum, but it is a signal of interest, not proof that it belongs in your production workflow without testing.
The project is still in a rename and multi-harness refactor phase. Some packages and commands retain old compatibility names like oh-my-opencode, so the experience is not perfectly settled across every workflow.
The Ultimate Edition still leaves real decisions to you: which provider to use, which subscription tier, which model. It does not make those choices for you.
Some README claims are marketing-heavy. Serious teams should verify the tool against real workflows on a side repository before rolling it into anything critical.
Oh My OpenAgent is for developers who use coding agents daily and want them to behave more predictably on large, complex repositories. If you only occasionally ask an AI to tweak a single file, you probably do not need this. If your agent sessions are long, involve multiple tools, and require self-verification before delivering results, it is worth a serious trial.
The takeaway: Oh My OpenAgent does not make models smarter. It makes the workflow around them more disciplined, and for heavy agent users, that discipline is the actual product.
