On June 2, 2026, Cognition announced that Windsurf has officially become Devin Desktop. This is not just a rename: it represents a shift in what an AI coding IDE is for, moving from autocomplete toward agent orchestration.
Devin Desktop retains the Windsurf IDE as its foundation but makes the Agent Command Center the primary interface. Where Windsurf 2.0 transformed the IDE from a code editor with autocomplete into an agent workspace, Devin Desktop takes the next step: it becomes a command center for managing multiple AI agents, both local and cloud-based, within a single workspace.
The Agent Command Center works like a Kanban board for AI agents. You can see which agents are running, which are blocked, and which tasks are waiting for review, regardless of whether the agent is running locally or in the cloud. This gives developers visibility into parallel agent work that previously required juggling multiple terminals and tabs.
The core change is the Agent Command Center, which serves as a dashboard for all agent activity. Agents appear as cards on a Kanban-style board with columns for Planning, Running, Blocked, and Ready for Review. You can launch local agents for tasks that need to run on your machine and cloud agents for long-running or resource-intensive work, all from the same interface.
Spaces act as containers for context: files, sessions, PRs, and notes related to a specific task are grouped together, so switching tasks means switching contexts cleanly. The Agent Client Protocol enables third-party agents to integrate into this workspace, so you are not restricted to Devin's own models. Devin Local, the Rust-based local agent, handles tasks that require on-machine execution and is designed to be more efficient with token usage than its predecessor.
This is a significant product direction change, not merely a rebrand. But it also means the IDE is becoming more complex: managing multiple agents, understanding their states, and reviewing their outputs adds cognitive overhead compared to traditional editing. Developers still need to review code, check logic, verify security, and make product decisions: agents can do more, but they do not eliminate human oversight. The official product name is Devin Desktop, and it should not be called "Windsurf 3.0" unless Cognition uses that name officially. The Devin v3 API is a separate topic from the desktop product. Finally, multi-agent orchestration is still early: not every agent will solve every task perfectly, and the value depends heavily on how well you define tasks and review outputs.
Devin Desktop is for developers who are already working with AI coding agents and want to manage multiple agents in parallel rather than one at a time. If your workflow involves running agents for feature work, bug fixes, and refactoring simultaneously, the command center model is directly relevant. It is less compelling for developers who primarily use AI for inline autocomplete and occasional chat.
The signal from this transition is clear: AI coding tools are moving from autocomplete to orchestration, and the IDE is becoming the control surface for that shift.
