Running out of API quota mid-coding session is one of the most frustrating things in modern development. 9Router solves this by pooling multiple AI accounts behind a single endpoint.
9Router is a local routing layer that combines multiple AI accounts, API keys, and model providers into a single endpoint. Instead of manually switching keys when you hit a rate limit, 9Router automatically rotates between your accounts and falls back across providers so your coding workflow never stops.
The tool works with familiar coding tools like Claude Code, Cursor, Cline, Codex, Gemini CLI, and any tool that uses an OpenAI-compatible endpoint. You configure your accounts once, point your tools at the 9Router endpoint, and the router handles the rest. It also includes token optimization features called RTK and Caveman that reduce wasted tokens, letting you stretch your quota further.
Setting up 9Router is straightforward. You install it via npm, add the accounts and API keys you have, and point your coding tools to the local 9Router endpoint. From that point, 9Router intercepts requests and routes them intelligently.
The routing logic uses round-robin rotation across accounts to distribute load evenly and avoid hitting any single account's limit prematurely. When an account does hit its quota, 9Router automatically switches to the next available account. If a provider errors out or all paid accounts are exhausted, it falls back through a three-tier system: subscription accounts first, then cheap models, then free models.
The token optimization features, RTK and Caveman, work by reducing the amount of context sent to the model in each request. Less wasted context means fewer tokens consumed per request, which means your quota lasts longer. The practical effect is that you can code for more hours on the same quota.
Pooling free accounts to avoid paying for AI services is a gray area. Most providers' terms of service are written assuming one user per account. Creating multiple free accounts to circumvent limits may violate those terms, and providers can detect and block this behavior. 9Router makes it technically easy, but you should understand the risks.
The fallback system means that when your primary accounts run out, you may silently drop to a lower-quality model. If you do not notice the switch, you might assume you are getting the same quality output when you are not. This can lead to subtle degradation in code quality that is hard to trace.
Token optimization features like RTK and Caveman reduce context size, which can also reduce output quality. Trimming context to save tokens means the model has less information to work with. There is a trade-off between cost savings and output quality, and it is not always clear where the line is.
The tool is local, which is good for privacy but means you are responsible for keeping it running. If your 9Router process crashes or your machine restarts, your coding tools will lose their endpoint until you restart it.
9Router is for developers who use AI coding tools regularly and frequently hit rate limits or quota caps. If you juggle multiple AI accounts, mix free and paid tiers, or want to squeeze maximum value from your existing subscriptions, this tool directly addresses your pain point. It is not for someone who uses AI occasionally and never comes close to their limits.
The takeaway: 9Router turns the annoying manual work of managing multiple AI accounts into an automated, transparent process. One endpoint, many accounts, no interruptions. Just be aware that maximizing free tiers through account pooling carries its own risks.
