OpenHuman is an open-source AI assistant that maintains long-term memory of your work, integrates with 118+ tools, and runs locally on your machine.
OpenHuman is an open-source AI assistant designed to be more than a chatbot. It maintains a persistent memory of your work, integrates with the tools you already use, and can take actions on your behalf. The core idea is an assistant that remembers your context across sessions, understands your daily workflow, and proactively helps with tasks rather than waiting for you to ask.
The project is built with Rust and Tauri, stores data locally in SQLite, and uses a component called TokenJuice to compress context before sending it to the language model. It integrates with Gmail, GitHub, Slack, Notion, Calendar, and over 118 other third-party services. It includes a Memory Tree for long-term context storage, an Obsidian-style wiki for Markdown notes, auto-fetching of new data from connected services, and a toolset that goes beyond chat to include web search, scraping, coding tools, git operations, linting, testing, browser control, cron scheduling, and multi-agent coordination. It also supports voice input and output, lip-sync for a mascot character, and can join Google Meet calls to listen, take notes, and respond.
OpenHuman runs as a local application built with Rust and Tauri, which gives it native performance and a small footprint. Data is stored locally in SQLite, including the Memory Tree, which is a structured representation of your work context that persists across sessions.
The 118+ integrations pull data from connected services on a schedule, keeping the Memory Tree up to date. For example, it can fetch new emails, check calendar changes, or monitor GitHub activity, and surface relevant information proactively. TokenJuice compresses this context before sending it to the language model, reducing token costs and keeping response times reasonable.
The toolset allows OpenHuman to take actions: searching the web, scraping pages, running code, executing git commands, running linters and tests, controlling a browser, scheduling tasks via cron, and coordinating multiple agents. Voice support enables hands-free interaction, and the Google Meet agent can participate in meetings, listen to discussion, take notes, and provide follow-up responses.
The ambition of OpenHuman is both its strength and its risk. Connecting 118+ services, maintaining long-term memory, running tools, controlling browsers, and joining meetings is a massive surface area. Each integration is a potential point of failure, a security consideration, and a maintenance burden.
Local-first storage is good for privacy but means you are responsible for backups. If your SQLite database is corrupted or lost, your assistant's memory is gone. There is no cloud sync mentioned, which is a trade-off.
The Memory Tree and auto-fetch features mean OpenHuman is constantly pulling data from your connected services. This has privacy implications, even if the data stays local. You should be deliberate about which services you connect and what data you allow it to access.
Voice and meeting integration are impressive features but also the most experimental. Real-time speech recognition, meeting participation, and lip-sync for a mascot are complex capabilities that may not work reliably in all environments.
The project is open-source, which means community support and development pace will determine its long-term viability. With 118+ integrations to maintain, this is a significant ongoing effort.
OpenHuman is for developers, knowledge workers, and power users who want an AI assistant that goes beyond chat. If you are frustrated by starting every AI conversation from scratch, if you want an assistant that can actually read your email and check your calendar, and if you are comfortable running a local application with broad access to your digital life, this is worth exploring. It is not for casual users who just want a chatbot.
The takeaway: OpenHuman is one of the most ambitious open-source AI assistant projects available, combining long-term memory, broad integrations, and real tooling capabilities. The scope is impressive but also demands careful setup and ongoing attention to privacy and security.
