Vercel and Netlify make deployment effortless, but they do not replace a VPS for everyone. OpenShip sits in the gap: an open-source, self-hostable deployment platform that brings push-to-deploy, previews, rollbacks, and SSL to your own server.
OpenShip is an open-source deployment platform with built-in CI/CD that you can self-host on your own VPS. You point it at a Git repository, select a server, and it handles building, containerizing, routing, and TLS termination for your application.
The platform supports a CLI, a web dashboard, and a desktop app. It auto-detects common frameworks, provides push-to-deploy, preview environments, rollbacks, live logs, monitoring, domain management, and automatic SSL. Applications run in standard Docker containers, which reduces lock-in to any provider's runtime. The README also lists support for Postgres, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, workers, WebSockets, storage, and backups.
Unusually for a deployment platform, OpenShip also includes a built-in mail server with self-hosted domains, mailboxes, webmail, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, SMTP, and REST API access.
The basic flow is compact. Connect your VPS via SSH, run openship init in your project directory, then openship deploy. OpenShip auto-detects common frameworks, builds the container, configures routing and SSL, and brings your application online behind a domain.
After deployment, the platform provides push-to-deploy from Git, preview environments per branch, rollback to previous deployments, live logs, resource monitoring, and domain management with automatic SSL certificate provisioning.
For backend services, OpenShip connects Postgres, Redis, MongoDB, workers, storage, and WebSocket services into the same private network as your application container, all managed through Docker Compose.
The mail server feature lets you enable mail for a domain, configure mailboxes, access webmail, and set up SPF, DKIM, and DMARC authentication records, with SMTP and REST API access for transactional email.
Easier deployment does not mean operations disappear. Self-hosting still requires you to manage the VPS itself: security, backups, OS updates, and resource monitoring remain your responsibility.
The documentation is still being refined, and some official pages describe deployment architecture details differently. Users should verify the current release and documentation before production use.
Self-hosted email requires particular attention to IP reputation, reverse DNS, and inbox deliverability. Setting up SPF, DKIM, and DMARC is necessary but not sufficient to guarantee your email reaches inboxes rather than spam folders.
OpenShip is for developers and small teams who want the deployment experience of a managed platform like Vercel or Netlify but need the control, cost structure, or data sovereignty of their own VPS. If you are comfortable with basic server administration and want to reduce the manual steps of deploying to a VPS, OpenShip addresses that gap directly.
The takeaway: OpenShip does not replace a VPS or eliminate operational responsibility, but it removes a significant amount of deployment pain. If you already run a VPS, it is worth evaluating how much of your current deployment workflow it can absorb.
