Repomix: Why Pack a Project When AI Agents Can Already Read It?

If Codex, Claude Code, Windsurf, and Cursor can already read your project directory, what is the point of a tool like Repomix? The answer depends on where you are sending your code.

What it is

Repomix is a tool that packages your entire project into a single, clean, shareable file. Think of it as a smart photocopier for code: it selects the chapters you need, skips the sensitive pages, and binds everything into one document you can send anywhere.

Coding agents like Cursor, Codex, Windsurf, and Claude Code work directly inside your project. They can read files, edit code, run commands, and debug. Repomix does something different. It does not work inside the project. It packages the project so you can send it somewhere else, to an AI that cannot see your local files.

Why it matters

• Web-based AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini cannot see the folder on your machine. Repomix lets you send your entire project to them in one file.
• If you are coding in Cursor but want a second opinion from Claude or ChatGPT, Repomix lets you send the same snapshot to multiple places without explaining the project from scratch each time.
• You control what gets sent. You can include source code and docs while blocking .env files, API keys, private data, and junk like node_modules and build output.
• It creates a fixed snapshot of your project at a point in time, which is useful for review, audit, or comparing code state later.

How it works

Repomix scans your project directory and concatenates the relevant files into a single output file. You can control what gets included with flags: --include "src/**" to only package your source code, or --ignore ".env,node_modules,dist" to exclude sensitive files and build artifacts. You can also package a remote GitHub repository with --remote. The result is one file you can paste into a web chat, send to a teammate, or attach to a review.

The key distinction is that coding agents work in the project, while Repomix packages the project for sending elsewhere. If you are already working directly in Cursor or Codex and do not need to send your code anywhere, you may not need Repomix at all.

Caveats

Repomix helps you filter files, but that does not mean you can blindly upload everything. Always check the output before sending it to an external AI. Do not upload .env files, private keys, secret tokens, customer data, database dumps, or log files containing private information. The tool gives you control, but the responsibility for what you send is still yours.

Who it's for

Repomix is for developers who use web-based AI tools alongside their coding agent, who want second opinions from different AIs, who need to send code to teammates or reviewers, or who want a fixed snapshot for audit purposes. If you only ever work inside a single coding agent and never need to share your project externally, you probably do not need it.
